Beginnings A considerable amount of archaeological work was done at Wilton House, a historical plantation for rent that is located in Virginia, near Colonial Williamsburg. The work, done in 2012 and 2013, was done to accompany the historical preservation and modernization work. Anytime there was digging to be done – for a new driveway or walkway, for planting and landscaping, for utility lines of every kind – archaeologists had to be on hand. They recorded what was found or to avoid disturbing areas thought to be of special interest. Archaeologists find little things than can sometimes tell big stories. A forthcoming report from Thane Harpole and his team from Data Investigations detailing their discoveries to date will be posted here when it becomes available. That report on the property’s archaeology and other topics will, in turn, point the way for future investigation. The soil at Wilton is rich in more ways than one.
